Trouble finding parking spots?

Finding a spot to park your truck for the night: sweet dream or nightmare?

This is no mystery: there are more trucks on the road today and there’s a shortage of truck parking spaces. If you have been driving a truck for a while, more than likely you’ve had to deal with this problem.  At the end of the day, as you drive around to search for an empty space to park up for the night, you are burning fuel, getting frustrated and becoming more tired. Recent polls say that truckers consider finding parking one of the most annoying issues for truckers in the US.

If you drive around the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, or the Pacific Northwest and California, you know that in some urban areas, safe and convenient overnight parking spots for trucks  can be as far as 80 miles from the city center. That adds 160 miles of extra driving per load—this is not only expensive for operators, but releases tons of carbon into the atmosphere and creates even more traffic congestion as empty 18-wheelers take up needed space on the road.

However, there are solutions, and proven technologies have been helping truckers deal with this issue for a while.

In this post, we’ll point towards possible solutions and how you can leverage them, so you can use your down time to rest, rather than drive around looking for a parking spot.

Two ways to find your parking spot in a more convenient way.

The first one is available to everyone and requires just a little bit of preparation and patience: carefully plan your route. Estimate where you will be when it’s time to stop and look for places in the vicinity where overnight  parking for trucks is available and the services you are looking for are provided. Call them ahead, some might even work with you to save a space. Alternatively, plan the trip in a way such that when you reach that point where you can safely and conveniently park for the night, you are about to reach your HOS time. Sound simple yet many don’t even think about it.

But, in the trucking business, not all goes as planned. You might get delayed because of either traffic, or simply detained at a shipper where you picked up a load. And the two hour delay means your HOS won’t let you reach that point where you planned to be at dusk.

For those cases, there are solutions too. There are mobile applications – parking apps- that can assist drivers find a place to rest in a certain area without going around wasting time. Apps like Trucker Path, Park My truck and Road Breakers, among others, help truckers find spots in advance, get the phone number of the facility and,  perhaps even reserve a space, if the truck stop allows for it. Right, there might be some little cost associated with the app, and not all are simple and intuitive as you might expect, or you might find that not all the stops are mapped out in the app, but think about the alternative: driving deadhead miles, perhaps in the middle of the night, hoping that that familiar spot still can accommodate you, just to find out that the last pot was taken an hour ago. Not fun.

We don’t have favorites and are not partial for any, as some might work better in some areas, but we highly encourage you to give them a try.
